The Olive Oil fraud – how food scandals damage the reputation and what ByItaly does about it
Italian Olive Oil is considered the best in the world. But is your olive oil really Italian ?
After the latest media coverage and inspections of public prosecutors more and more people have reason to doubt the real origin of their oil. Reports have shown that Italy imports a lot of olive oil from Spain, Greece, Tunisia and Marocco. And unfortunately some of this oil ends up in bottles that are declared as Italian Olive Oil. Beta-carotene helps to add flavor and chlorophyll changes the colour.
This is fraud. But this problem concerns mostly big and often cheap producers.
And this is exactly why ByItaly works with small high quality producers. We know where our oil comes from. And we check the origin.
This year – as you may know – in Umbria olive trees have suffered because of the bad weather and there is only a few amount of oil that the families keep for themselves. Instead of risking fake Umbrian Olive Oil we looked for oil elsewhere. But not in Turkey, Spain or Grecce.
We went to the region of Lazio and found a place where the climate has been mild and the production is intact: Gaeta. All the oil we sell in 2014 comes from Gaeta. We tried differnte oils, but chose only those that meet ByItaly’s high standards.
And for even more safety:
We will publish the certificates of the analysis.
All the bottles are closed with the new taps (anti-rabbocco-tap) according to the new European law.
This means that if you buy your olive oil on ByItaly there is no risk. We guarantee for real Italian Olive Oil. If you have any doubts, please
