The secrets of Olive Harvest in Italy – How to fight the fly without chemicals
The Olive harvest is almost over in Italy. The last olives are being pressed. The bottles are being filled.
And we can tell you : It is still a lot of manual work in the olive groves. (This is why you should always be skeptic if you see cheap olive oil…).
You have to spread out the net,
then pick the olives with rakes so they fall down onto the net. And finally you roll up the net to collect the olives in containers.
Usually friends and family come to help and earn a lunch and a bottle or two for their work.
While helping out at the olive harvest this year, we have also learned a lot:
For example: Did you know what these strange plastic bottles are for ? They have tuna and sugar water inside, which attracts the flies which are dangerous for the trees.
This way you can fight the flies without putting any chemical stuff on the trees. For real organic olive oil.
