Italy: Carnevalino – the traditional start of carneval in Pretola, Umbria
Everybody knows carneval in Venice. But do you know carneval in Pretola ?
To be precise : Carnevalino in Pretola – a small village on the banks of the tiber river close to Peruiga in Umbria ?
Carnevalino (literally: little carneval) is a small statue – a kind of spirit of carneval which is excavated a few weeks before the real carneval.
Hundreds of people – lots of children – gathered around the tower of Pretola yesterday to get Carnevalino out of the earth where he is buried at the end of carneval.
Then a sort of procession starts with Carnevalino: everybody walks from one stop to the next to try (what else ?) different foods. Fireworks and lanterns were part of the “festa”.
At the end everybody gathered for dinner and voted for the best stopover.
