    Our mission: protection and preservation of the uniqueness and peculiarity of saffron

    The production of saffron in Città della Pieve (Umbria) has been documented since the 13th century. At that time, saffron was used primarily for dyeing clothes, as far as Città della Pieve was an important center for the production of cloth.

    The oldest evidence of the cultivation  of saffron is stated in the “Statuti di Perugia” of 1279. Nowadays, the Consortium Alberto Viganò "Il Croco by Pietro Perugino - Zafferano di Città della Pieve" collects several companies devoted to the cultivation of saffron and ensures that all stages of production, from the field to dryness, are carried out respecting precise quality standards, in order to obtain pure stigmas with unexceptionable organoleptic characteristics. Only after the strict controls of the staff of the consortium each manufacturer may set the seal on the packaging that certifies the highest quality product.

    One of the companies in the consortium that has stood for excellence in the production of saffron is the Agricultural Fontanelle. It Overlooks a beautiful valley, near the water-springs of Saint Lucia, where once the small village of Pieve Caina (Perugia, Umbria) used to go to stock up on water. Nowadays a lake continues to collect this precious gift, forming a mosaic of color that blends with the surrounding forest.

    The altitude of 450 meters on the petition of the sea, the silty-clay soil and the presence of a good structure, make the land suitable for the cultivation of this precious spice.
    For this reasons, two young agronomists and entrepreneurs have decided to bet on the philosophy of saffron, to embody in an exemplary manner, the deepest spirit of what the earth and man can give.

    Good to know: Saffron is not only a spice but a rich source of aroma, vitamins and minerals which for their properties are able to positively affect our health both in terms of prevention in degenerative - metabolic diseases, or at therapeutic level, thus opening new perspectives for its use beyond the already recognized characteristics.
