    The Family

The family of Conti Faina has always been linked to Umbria. Although the first written records date back to the 17th century, with the Earl Zeffirino Faina (1826 - 1917) who wrote a chapter in the history of the area. Zeffirino was an entrepreneur, researcher, innovator, politician and patriot. Founder of the University of Perugia, introduced revolutionary choices to the local agriculture. He was passionate about wine. He was the first to introduce the concept of specialized viticulture in Umbria, thanks to the studies carried out in France and the knowledge of the Tuscan model, which was learned through his friendship with the Baron Bettino Ricasoli.
The wines of Collelungo become so well known and sought in Umbria, Lombardia, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Lazio. That history lives on today thanks to the project of Sebastian and Alexander Faina, along with Angelica Faina, daughter of Sebastiano.

    The winery: since 1876

The Castle Collelungo (13th century) hosts the historic cellar that thanks to Zeffirino Faina reached notoriety since 1876. You may find a barrel witness of this ancient history dated 1883. once used to rest wines famous throughout Italy for their quality.
Rooms and galleries are still the original ones, oas well as the basement of the castle.
The cellar is not only the place of production but also a real tourist attraction whis has to be preserved for the next generations.
The galleries where the wines get old are 150 meters long, creating a real path between arches and secret passages, along with it you can also find antiques related to wine production, thus creating a small museum of the wine making. The castle also is housed in a medieval village still inhabited and has an old world charm, where you can walk through the streets and meet extraordinary characters.

    The vineyard

The old plants (canopy manipulation technique) were replaced with low screws: Ther result: a higher density of more than 7000 vines per hectare.
In the same places chosen by Zeffirino Faina, there are still the vineyards of Agricola Faena at an altitude between 400 and 530 meters above sea level, on medium-textured clay, with skeleton, exposed to the north east, with a density of 4761 vines per hectare.
The varieties are Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sagrantino, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Verdicchio, for a total of approximately 24 hectares.
Common local grape varieties are combined with international varieties with original results thanks to the blend studied by the company.
